Psalms Chapter 8
A Spoken Sermon on Psalm 8
When I read Psalm 8, I donโt just see wordsโI hear a cry of wonder.
โO Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth!โ
This is not a quiet thought. This is a heart overwhelmed.
David looks upโnot at himself, not at his problemsโbut at the heavens. The moon, the stars, the work of Godโs fingers. And in that moment, something shifts inside him. He begins to realise just how big God isโฆ and just how small he feels.
And yetโthis is the mysteryโGod still thinks about us.
โWhat is man, that Thou art mindful of him?โ
Have you ever felt small like that? Not just in the worldโbut in life. Wondering, โDo I matter? Does God really see me?โ
David felt that too.
But he didnโt stop at feeling smallโhe went further. He realised that although man is small, he is not insignificant. God crowned man with glory and honour. God gave man responsibility. Dominion. Purpose.
Think about that.
The same God who placed the stars in the skyโฆ
The same God who formed the moon and stretched out the heavensโฆ
That same God looks at youโand says, โYou matter to Me.โ
Not because of what youโve done.
Not because of your strength.
But because He chose you.
And here is where it becomes even more powerful.
Psalm 8 is not just about mankindโit points us to Christ.
Because while man was given honour, man also fell. We failed. We lost what God intended. But then came Jesusโthe perfect Manโwho fulfilled what we could not.
He stepped into our place.
He walked in obedience.
He humbled Himselfโฆ even unto death.
And now through Him, what was lost is restored.
So when David says, โThou hast crowned him with glory and honour,โ we see the fullness of that in Christโand through Christ, it reaches us.
That means your life is not an accident.
Your existence is not a mistake.
You were made with purposeโdivine purpose.
But Psalm 8 brings us back to where it started.
Not with manโฆ but with God.
โO Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth!โ
You see, when we truly understand who God is, everything else finds its place. Our worries shrink. Our pride fades. Our confusion clears. Because we realiseโitโs not about lifting ourselves upโitโs about lifting Him up.
And when God is lifted high, something happens inside us.
We begin to see clearly.
We begin to walk rightly.
We begin to live as we were meant to live.
So tonight, or today, wherever you areโlift your eyes.
Stop looking inward.
Stop measuring yourself by your weakness.
Stop comparing yourself to others.
Look up.
See the heavens.
See the greatness of God.
And then rememberโHe sees you.
He knows you.
He cares for you.
He has crowned you with purpose through Jesus Christ.
And let your heart say itโnot just with words, but with your life:
โO Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth.โ
Amen.
