WORDS — TWO (A Poem)
Words can be like medicine,
They heal or bring you low,
They lift a weary, broken heart,
Or strike a crushing blow.
In this present world we live,
We guard what we might say,
Yet use the Lord’s most holy Name
In careless, common way.
As children we were often told,
With voices brave and bold,
“Sticks and stones may break your bones,
But words cannot take hold.”
But life has taught a deeper truth,
Far different from that claim,
For words can scar the human soul
And leave a lasting pain.
The wounds from stones may fade with time,
The body can restore,
But words once spoken, sharp and deep,
Can wound forevermore.
Some souls still carry heavy hearts,
From things so long ago,
A sentence said in passing once
Still brings a silent blow.
Yet God can turn those very words
To blessings from above,
For disappointments in His hand
Can shape us through His love.
Remember Moses, full of zeal,
Who sought to do what’s right,
Yet harsh words drove him far away
In fear and lonely flight.
They saw not what his heart had done,
Nor thanked him for his stand,
But judged him by their fearful thoughts,
Not by his helping hand.
I knew a teacher once who said
Her childhood bore a scar,
A voice declared she’d nothing be,
Would never travel far.
Yet those same words became the fire
That pushed her to succeed,
But still the pain within her voice
Showed hurt that did not leave.
So I have learned to guard my tongue,
And choose my words with care,
To speak to men before their face,
Not whisper unaware.
For truth must always still be told,
But clothed in gentle grace,
Not thrown like stones to wound a soul,
But given in its place.
For Christ has said our words will judge,
Or set the captive free,
So let them be both pure and few,
In truth and honesty.
How many words we might not speak,
If we could only see,
The ears that hear, the hearts they reach,
And their eternity.
