Angry with God โ Jonah 4:9- Poem
Have you ever been angry with God above,
Questioned His ways, though Heโs full of love?
For some that thought would never arise,
Till sorrow comes and darkens the skies.
When someone dear is taken away,
And grief takes hold with no words to say,
Even the strongest, steady and true,
May cry, โLord, why? What did You do?โ
A man once lost his young little son,
A life cut short, scarcely begun,
He drove in pain with tears that flowed,
And laid the blame on Almighty God.
Yet later on, his heart grew still,
He bowed in repentance to Godโs own will,
For in our sorrow we often cry,
Not seeing truth with tear-filled eye.
For children wander, swift and small,
It takes watchful eyes to guard them all,
And though we question, we must see clear,
Not all that happens is God brought near.
Be careful, friend, what you request,
For God may answerโand know whatโs best,
A father prayed for a son one day,
And God said โyesโ in His own way.
Yet that same son brought grief and pain,
Not joy the father hoped to gain,
For what we ask may come to be,
But not as we had dreamed to see.
I mind the nights of prayer so deep,
When saints would sow while others sleep,
Old Jimmy prayed till heaven felt near,
Godโs holy presence filled the air.
One day I saw him, head bowed low,
Beside his car, not long ago,
โGeorge,โ he said, โwould you help me here?โ
Yet heโd been prayingโGod would appear.
The bonnet stuck, no help in sight,
But God had heard his prayer that night,
And sent me there, though unaware,
An answer to that humble prayer.
But sorrow came, as sorrow will,
His grandson diedโand time stood still,
That faithful man, so strong before,
Was never quite the same once more.
And Jonah too, with heart so hard,
Refused to heed the Lordโs regard,
For Nineveh, so steeped in sin,
He did not want Godโs grace within.
A hundred thousand souls and more,
Yet Jonah grieved a plant he bore,
It shaded him for just one day,
Then withered quickly all away.
He cared more for that fleeting shade,
Than souls for whom Godโs mercy stayed,
And still today, how sad to see,
We prize the small more than eternity.
โThey donโt deserve it,โ Jonah cried,
โTheyโre wicked through and through inside,โ
But who deserves Godโs grace so free?
Not themโฆ not himโฆ not youโฆ not me.
If God should mark our sins each one,
Who then could stand before His throne?
We live by mercy, love, and grace,
Not by our works or rightful place.
So when your heart is torn apart,
And anger rises in your heart,
Take heed, dear soul, and humbly trod,
Be slow to lay the blame on God.
Forgive the faults that others do,
As God shows mercy unto you,
For in His love we stand completeโ
In grace alone, at Jesusโ feet.
